Oh shit

Posted in The Long Rode on March 27th, 2011 by Wade

Alex and I worked on the bike tonight.  We did two things to start with , First was to replace the spedo mounts and the second was to remove the bag guards.  We start with dissembling the screws that were being used to hold down the speedo.  This was obviously a shade tree mechanic approach to mounting the speedo.  To correct this we got new pegs, grommets, and clips.  This project was all Alex.  She took the old screws and grommets out then when she tried to put the new grommets in she had a hard time doing it.  So we unscrewed the cable.  This also gave us an opportunity to wipe it off.  Alex got the new grommets in and, we reassembled the spedo and Alex got here first ever experience with “oh shit” clips (aka E clips).  She tried for a while to get the first one snapped on using needle nose pliers but was not quite able to get it.  After I showed her how she did get the other side.  After all that she only lost one clip and now knows whey they have such a colorful name.

Next we went on to the bag guards.  Because of the rust issues it took some creative use of screw drivers and wrenches to be able to get enough grip to turn the nuts off of the bolts.  But we got them off and nobody got bit by the black widow that was living up in the fender.

Well wrestling season is over and I’m almost done with my work bench.  Now Alex and I are just waiting for a week end with no track meet so we can start to work on the bike.

The first parts arrived today and I took the boy to the man store, auto parts, to get some fuel line.  The parts that came include

  1. wing style petcock
  2. oil filter
  3. speedo mounting bushings
  4. master cylinder rebuild kit
  5. seat clevis and spring
  6. clear timing hole bolt

Now with the petcock and fuel line I can put the fuel system back together.  Then I’ll just need to add some oil the filter and electricity and we should get some combustion, fingers crossed.
As we get closer I’ll keep you up to date.  hopefully there will be some video of its first breaths.

I’m exited.  My order shipped and ups has it in transit from KC.  According to them there are three days left until it gets here.

Here we go again

It’s a new year, Christmas has passed, my birthday has passed, and wrestling is almost over.  I have gotten some money from the a for mentioned holidays and have made some purchases to start getting the fuel system working.  I also found a local source for a battery and with that I’m hoping to start testing the electrical system this weekend :D.  I’d write more but I’m feeding the baby so I’ve got to go.
